Midgie Magic (formerly Sandfly Salve) was designed many years ago to help newcomers to Broome cope with biting midges and other insects. This cream is to put on after you have been bitten, as subsequent swelling, itching and infection following bites is the main problem. The cream helps to soothe, reduce the itch, disinfect and help bites with natural anti-inflammatory ingredients. Works also on bee stings and even, so we are told, on Scottish midgies!

Please note that an unlucky few will have severe reactions to midge bites, requiring medical attention and anti-histamines.

Our radical solution to combat the plague proportions of mozzies which can make life difficult in the Kimberley from February to May, at the end of the Wet and, of course, for similar conditions throughout Australia at various times. We wanted a large quantity natural but effective Pestoff trigger spray which can be kept at the front door and easily applied all over whenever gardening, building and other outdoor activities are sabotaged by clouds of mozzies. So here it is:

An all-natural herbal, neem and essential oil spray concentrate to discourage bites, in tropical strength. And feedback is unanimous that it works! The critters buzz around, but won't land on sprayed skin. We made a concentrate in a 100ml glass bottle which can easily be sent by mail order. You don't pay the freight for water. This concentrate makes up 500ml of spray. You can either purchase the empty good quality trigger spray bottle from us or buy your own from a hardware or gardening store.

Simply pour the 100ml concentrate into your 500ml bottle, top up with water, shake well and use. If your bottle holds less, use 1 part concentrate to every 4 parts water (eg. 20ml or 1 tablespoon concentrate plus 80ml water for a 100ml bottle).

Contains: local plant extracts, neem oil, polysorbate 20 (harmless solubuliser to make the spray homogenous), pure essential oils of eucalyptus citriodora, spike lavender, geranium, kunzea and peppermint, benzylalcohol DHA (preservative). Active ingredients - neem and essential oils, plant extracts.

Our highly successful Pestoff Concentrate made into a smaller 125ml spray version for normal use or a 500ml trigger spray for heavy use requirements. 

A completely natural herbal spray designed to deter insects. It contains no DEET but has 3 active ingredient types - a local plant extract used traditionally to deter insects, neem oil (a natural insecticide) and insect deterring essential oils. It works perfectly well if used properly - it needs to be applied to all exposed skin and re-applied every 2 - 3 hours.

Use sparingly on children under 3 years as this spray contains 3% essential oils.  Some customers have told us anecdotally that Pestoff works if diluted again by half, so we suggest trying this on young children. As for all skin care products, patch test on the inner wrist first. Always cover up physically (eg. with muslin over a pram) if you can. Another idea is to use a thick layer of coconut oil or baby oil (a mineral oil which stays on the surface) on exposed skin so insects can't get a purchase on skin. A large 500ml bottle is available but due to its weight, we suggest you buy just the Pestoff Concentrate plus the empty 500ml trigger spray bottle and add your own water.

A fresh and antiseptic soap useful to help guard against infection and to repel insects. This makes it a perfect soap to take camping. It is also useful when the mozzies or midges are out, or when children have cuts or sores on their skin. Our all vegetable soy wax Monaco glass container candles are safe, non-toxic and environmentally sustainable. They burn up to 50% longer than paraffin candles, contain higher levels of essential oils (we use 4%), and spills clean up easily with hot soapy water. We love making them too.

Small Soybeams - 7.5cm high, 6cm wide, 55 g of wax, burn around 8 hours. 

Medium Soybeams - 10cm high, 8cm wide, 165 g of wax, burn around 40 hours. 

In our shop we also offer Large Soybeams (320 g wax) to personal shoppers at $38 each. However, we have found these too fragile to be freighted for mail order customers. They need to be carried on planes as hand luggage. 

A handy travel pack containing the basics for tropical insect survival, all hand made with care from natural ingredients. This pack contains Broome Bug Soap - a hand made insect deterring and antiseptic soap, perfect for camping and travel in tropical regions. There is a 125ml Pestoff non-DEET effective spray repellent which works well if applied correctly to all exposed skin areas every 2-3 hours.

If you DO experience bites from mosquitoes, biting midgies (sandflies), bees or other insects, just dab on Midgie Magic (30ml) to reduce the itch and heal the bite. Kunzea ambigua (Tasmania)

Also known as Australian Southern Spring flower or Tick Bush and found growing in North East Tasmania or South East mainland Australia, Kunzea essential oil contains 5 sesquiterpine (or C15) compounds that all have strong anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore it can be an excellent addition to any joint or muscle treatment. These anti-inflammatory qualities, combined with it’s anti-infectious properties can also make Kunzea essential oil a good treatment for insect bites.
These magical properties of the Kunzea ambigua plant were discovered when a farmer in Tazmania called John Hood noticed that where it was growing by a wire fence, there was no rust on the steel and decided to investigate!

We use high percentages of kunzea in our Midgie Magic, Achy Breaky, Healing Cream, and also Pestoff spray & concentrate.
